Starbucks is seeking a highly skilled and motivated senior accountant to join the Starbucks Coffee Trading Company (SCTC) Accounting team. You will contribute to Starbucks success by supporting SCTC’s green coffee and cocoa sourcing ($1B annual spend), G&A spend for SCTC & Farmer Support Centers (FSCs), hedge accounting, intercompany deferred profit elimination, and purchase price variance accounting. This individual contributor will ensure the effective accounting and management of the SCTC balance sheet and P&L, while also acting as a green coffee accounting subject matter expert who is able to influence cross-functional teams between accounting, finance, operations, and technology.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participates in monthly closing process and provides analytical insight into variances against forecast
  • Ensures accurate and timely presentation of financial results and proper application of accounting policies and procedures in area of responsibility
  • Identifies and routinely uses the most effective, cost efficient and best business practices to execute process improvements related to margin analysis, deferred profit and product costing, continually evaluates effectiveness and appropriateness
  • Performs variance analysis and key drivers in support of business performance improvement and strategic decision making
  • Acts as subject matter expert in green coffee accounting practices and processes and influences cross functional teams
  • Executes month-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial data in compliance with GAAP and company policies and continues to develop and streamline processes
  • Sets up and maintains accounting and fiscal control records and procedures, ensures journal entries, reconciliations and records are in compliance with accounting regulations, SOX controls and company policies
  • Leads or performs complex financial analyses to identify and analyze business risks
  • Provides or facilitates root cause explanations, quantifies opportunities and risks, recommends alternatives
  • Drives continuous process improvements to support the growth of the business
  • Researches new or complex accounting guidance for business transactions and recommends appropriate accounting approach to senior management and implements necessary procedures
  • Reviews new business proposals, identifies issues, risk and opportunities. Executes financial due diligence and explains ramifications of findings and recommendations for project progress

Summary of Experience

  • Experience in accounting at a professional level, including journal entries, account reconciliation, reporting and analysis or equivalent experience (5+ years)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Experience using an ERP system and business intelligence and reporting tools (such as Hyperion and Oracle) preferred
  • CPA preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to assess business processes and implement improvements and controls
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and internal controls
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate accounting results to both accounting and non-accounting customers at various levels of the organization
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to lead and influence others without authority vertically and horizontality throughout the organization and within cross-functional teams
  • Ability to multi-task and manage priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment, while exhibiting exceptional attention to detail and continuously driving process improvements
  • Experience with business intelligence and reporting tools
  • Ability to work independently
  • Displays initiative and has the ability to improve processes and document work performed
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word
