Background

The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis (JFGI) is the central fundraising and community planning organization for the greater Indianapolis Jewish Community. With an Annual Campaign of $4.6 million and an Endowment of $90 million, the Federation supports and enriches the lives of Jews locally, nationally, in Israel, and around the world. The organization provides vital funding to several local and regional agencies, many national and overseas partners, and numerous independent programs that provide deeper connection, and create a safe and thriving Jewish community in Central Indiana. The Federation resides on and manages the operations of a 40-acre campus, and programs funded by the Federation create life-sustaining and life-changing impact, while inspiring and engaging members of the Indianapolis Jewish Community.

Summary

Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant is a multi-project team member. This position will work with the financial team responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The position covers a wide variety of activities including accounts payable and receivables, which are integral part of general ledger, along with financial reporting and year-end audit preparation process.  In time, the position will expand into the financial support professional for a Capital Campaign. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • A/P Functions including generating reports, entering bills, processing checks and electronic payments
  • Posting of A/R and other functions in the Finance Department
  • Process & preparation of monthly journal entries for financial statements
  • Reconciliation of accounts
  • Document business processes under current responsibilities
  • Provide financial support for Capital Campaign
  • Provide support for Administrative Team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Entry level position, however, accounting/bookkeeping experience or intern preferred
  • Organized self-starter with strong ability to prioritize, work independently, trouble shoot and multi task
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with comfort in data entry
  • Ability to project manage independently and across numerous departments
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, fast moving environment
  • Ability to understand processes and suggest ways to enhance them
  • Demonstrates perseverance to see tasks through to completion
  • Capable of working effectively with team members and volunteers
  • Desire to feel like you are making a difference and having impact

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a variety of responsibilities, along with having some consistency of routine tasks.

  • Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of an office setting. The work environment is usually fast-paced with constant stimulation and mobility. This job requires interaction with staff, volunteers and donors.  Expectations are that the individual will present a professional appearance and behave in a professional manner at all times.  Physical demands are primarily limited to operating general office equipment to include computers, telephones, office equipment, bending, lifting, and on occasion program set up.
