Hiring Range: $25 to $32 hourly

The Corporate Staff Accountant performs a wide variety of accounting functions to maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulations for Champlain Housing Trust’s (CHT) operating funds as well as those for properties owned and/or managed by CHT. This individual must take a proactive, independent approach to complete assigned duties with exacting accuracy, confidentiality, efficiency, and in adherence with CHT policies and procedures. The Corporate Staff Accountant will also use a positive attitude, strong communication and people skills to work effectively with co-workers within and outside the department and external stakeholders as needed in carrying out all duties.

Essential Job Duties:

Fund Accounting:

  • Reconcile corporate activities for CHT’s Property Management, Co-Op and Resident Services programs including monthly bank, general ledger and supplemental schedules.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Accounting Manager, Director of Finance and program staff for regular analysis and reporting
  • Coordinate with Property Accounting for reconciliation and analysis of intercompany activity between CHT and Properties.
  • Support Corporate Accounting Manager and Direct or of Finance with preparation of annual corporate budgets.
  • Carry out all assigned pre-audit preparation throughout the year and during the annual audits.

Payroll:

  • Process bi-weekly payroll including validation and journal entry according to CHT policies and procedures and all applicable regulations.
  • Maintain and update payroll procedures, records, files, and other related tasks.
  • Generate all required payroll reports, 3rd party check requests as applicable, general ledger export, import and all other related reporting.
  • Responsible for all communication and coordination with HR related to payroll processing, data, and information.
  • Perform quarterly and year-end payroll processes.

General Duties:

  • Assures the timely entry of financial information for each fund in CHT’s portfolio in accordance with state and federal requirements and GAAP
  • Provides support and backup for internal and/or intercompany bank transfers.
  • Provide support and backup for accounts payable invoice entry, review and weekly check runs.
  • Provide support and backup for daily bank deposits for corporate and property activity including deposit processing, bank runs, matching and proper documentation.
  • Recognize and recommend procedural improvements or efficiencies when appropriate and applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting and at least 5 years of experience working in a professional environment is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered if appropriate skills can be demonstrated.
  • Payroll experience required.
  • Strong command of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and attention to detail are required.
  • Experience working with federal grant awards and conditions is a strong plus.
  • Must have a positive attitude, be proactive, self-motivated and highly productive.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a busy environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must.
  • Must be committed to social justice, equity, inclusion and CHT’s membership based model of community controlled and permanently affordable housing.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check is required.

Physical and Mental abilities: The Corporate Staff Accountant must have the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential job duties listed above. However, reasonable accommodation may be extended to help perform those duties. The job entails long periods of sitting at a desk. There may be prolonged periods of computer work. While performing the essential duties of this job the Accountant may have to use hands and fingers, walk, stand, reach, or lift up to 25 pounds.

Work Atmosphere:

Champlain Housing Trust is a non-profit, member-based organization. The work entails significant self motivation. Occasional travel to meetings and seminars may be required.
