Description:
The
Accountant II performs a variety of complex, professional level accounts payable work in the preparation and maintenance of financial, accounting and statistical records.
Essential Functions
- Assembles and processes payments for WSSC Water selected procurement card vendor
- Prepares and reconciles electronic files
Performs audit sampling of transactions and receipts
Runs, manages and analyzes reports
Reviews the work of A/P Specialists and accounting clerks
Performs payment-related responsibilities as a back up to the A/P Specialists; performs travel-related responsibilities as a back up to the Accountant I
Assists with preparing, reviewing and processing monthly and year-end accruals
Assists with the monthly and fiscal year-end comparative analysis
Performs and assists with weekly and month-end closing tasks
Reconciles the p-card suspense general ledger account and prepares journal entries
Participates in projects and contributes to the work group for systems, processes and data
Coordinates and controls all user acceptance testing of computer applications during upgrades, enhancements and maintenance
Other Functions
- Assists with preparing accounts payable sections statistical reports
- Assists with gathering and assembling documentation for auditors
Verifies scanned weekly A/P invoices, payments (checks, EFTs and wires) and supporting documentation
Assists with the completion of vendor credit applications and W-9 requests
Classifies and prepares cash receipts and expenditures in accordance with standard accounting principles and account code combinations for WSSC Water revenue
Participates in the formulation and administration of internal processes and procedures for financial/accounting functions
Assists with maintaining iSupplier vendor database
Assists team members with interpretation and application of Commission policies and accounting procedures
Assists with training and initial orientation for new employees
Performs other related duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Thorough working knowledge of accounting theory, practices, terminology, procedures and computer spreadsheet applications
- Thorough working knowledge of A/P payment policies and procedures and the proper application
Proficiency with A/P software application, check printing software and hardware
Advanced skill and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications
Ability to analyze, interpret, reconcile and resolve problems with systems, processes and data
Ability to research vendor payments for accurate disbursement of funds
Ability to proficiently operate calculators, personal computers, and other office equipment and to instruct others in their use
Ability to perform complex mathematical computations quickly and accurately
Ability to train, plan and monitor the work of others
Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and WSSC Water customers
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3+ years accounting or financial analysis experience
OR
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 7+ years accounting or financial analysis experience
